A man once sought spiritual initiation and requested a special wazifah (Spiritual litany). However, his beard was shorter than the minimum length prescribed by Islamic law. The great Imam of Ahl-e-Sunnat, Sayyidi Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Alaihir Rahmah, responded:
"Once your beard is in accordance with the Sharee requirement, the wazifah will be given."
A few days later, the same person repeated his request. Sayyidi Ala Hazrat Alaihir Rahmah replied:
"There is no need for further request. As soon as your beard complies with Sharee guidelines, the wazifah will be given automatically."
The profound lesson he conveyed was this:
"What is Waajib (Compulsory) must take precedence over what is voluntary."
