الصلوة والسلام عليك يا رسول الله
This touching event in which the palm trunk wailed on account of its separation from The Beloved Prophet ﷺ has been widely reported, and has been transmitted by more than ten Companions. There are Many narrations with different wording, some are as follows:
Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah tells us that the Prophet's ﷺMasjid was built from the trunks of Date palm trees with a roof laid over them. During the khutbah, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would lean against one of the palm trunks, but when a Mimbar was built for him, we heard the trunk let out a sound similar to that of a she camel, when she gives birth.
In Sayyiduna Anas's رضي الله عنه narration it says that the Masjid began to echo with the sound of it's wailing, it sounded like an ox, and Sayyiduna Sahl رضي الله عنه informs us that the congregation wept profusely when they saw the date palm trunk crying.
Sayyiduna Ubai رضي الله عنه said, "It nearly split and burst apart, due to it's crying, then The Beloved Prophet ﷺ went to it and placed his hand upon it and it became quiet."
In one Narration The Prophet ﷺ, told his companions, "This trunk wails because it is deprived of Dhikr."
In Another Narration its added, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I had had not hugged it, it would have remained wailing like this, up until the Day of Judgement on account of it's grieving for Me "
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه informs us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave instructions for the trunk to be buried under the Mimbar. Sayyiduna Sahl رضي الله عنه said that it was either buried under the Mimbar or placed on the roof.
Sayyiduna Ubai رضي الله عنه mentions that The Beloved Prophet ﷺ would often pray near this trunk, and during the reconstruction of the Masjid he gave it to me, and it remained in my possession until it finally turned to dust.
Imam Al Isfira'ini رضي الله عنه adds, The Beloved Prophet ﷺ called it to come to him when he heard it crying, it came eating up the ground and clung to him. Then The Beloved Prophet ﷺ commanded it to return to its place so it returned.
Sayyiduna Burayda رضي الله عنه narrates the conversation between The Beloved Prophet ﷺ, and the palm-trunk. The Prophet ﷺ, spoke to it saying, "If you like, I will put you back in the garden you came from, so that your roots can grow and your shape be restored, and you will bear fruit and leaves once more. Or, if you prefer, I will plant you in Jannah so that the Aulia-Allah may eat from your fruits."
The Prophet ﷺ waited for the reply, the palm trunk replied, "Yes, plant me in Jannah so that the Aulia -Allah may eat from me," The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, "this, I have done."
Then Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, "It has chosen the Lasting Abode over that of the passing."
Whenever Sayyiduna Hasan Al Basri رضي الله عنه narrated this story, he would weep and say, "O. Worshipers of Allah, the palm trunk yearned for the closeness of The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and longed for him, we should have even more yearning to meet him!"
Many of the closest Companions transmitted this story, and many followers narrated it from them.
