Fasting Six Days of Shawwal after Ramadan

..:: || 'Like Fasting the Entire Year' || ::..

Sayyiduna Ayyub (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said,

“Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah; Ahmad transmitted it from Jabir]

Sayyiduna Thawban (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said,

“Whoever fasts Ramadan, and then six days after Eid, it is an entire year. Whoever does a good deed shall have ten times its reward.”

Important Notes:

1. Based on this, the majority of the fuqaha, including the Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali school, have held that it is recommended to fast six days of the month of Shawwal. [Radd al-Muhtar; Mughni al-Muhtaj Shah al-Minhaj; Kashshaf al-Qina']

2. It is permitted to fast these six days separately throughout the month, or consecutively, after Eid al-Fitr.

3. It is prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman) and sinful to fast on Eid day itself. [Radd al-Muhtar]

4. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis state that it is superior to make the six fasts consecutive[Minhaj, Ghayat al-Muntaha]. Khatib al-Shirbini explains the reasoning as being,

“In order to hasten to do the good, and because of the problems inevitable in delaying,”

such as becoming lazy and not actually fulfilling this sunnah in the end, though he points out that the sunnah is fulfilled by both consecutive and non-consecutive fasting of six days in Shawwal. [Mughni al-Muhtaj]

The later Hanafi scholars differed as to which is better, fasting the six days consecutively or non-consecutively, though neither is disliked and both fulfill the sunnah. [Radd al-Muhtar]

However, it would be agreed that those who fear not fulfilling the recommendation due to laziness, forgetfulness or other excuses, should hasten to fast the six days consecutively immediately after Eid al-Fitr.

5. The reward is akin to having fasted obligatory fasts the entire year days, according to Buhuti, Shirbini, and others.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) said,

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, though there is good in both. Be avid for that which benefits you. Rely on Allah and do not deem yourself incapable…” [Muslim:4816, Ibn Majah:76, Ahmad:8436]

Imam Nawawi (Allah have mercy on him) explained that the ‘strength’ in this hadith refers to, “One’s determination and ability in matters of the next life.”

And Allah alone gives success!!

One Million Sinners Freed From Hell Every Day

Whilst mentioning the favours, bounties, mercy and forgiveness from Allah, one day the Beloved and Blessed Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said,

"On the first night of Ramadan, Allah sees His creation with mercy, and if Allah sees any of His servants with mercy He will not punish that servant. He frees one million (sinners) from Hell every day, and on the 29th night He sets free as many as were freed throughout the month. On the night of Eid al-Fitr, the angels rejoice and Allah reveals the specific attribute of His Noor and says to them, ‘O group of angels! What is the reward for a labourer that has completed his work?’ They reply that he be given his complete recompense. Allah then says, ‘Be witness that I have forgiven each one of them.’" [Kanz al-Ummal, Vol. 8, Page 219, Hadith 23702]

May Allah also include us in those fortunate forgiven ones... Aameen!!

Signs Of Laylat Al-Qadr

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (Radi Allahu Anhu) asked the Noble Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) about Laylat al-Qadr. The Holy Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) replied:

"Laylat al-Qadr is in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, i.e. 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th or the last night of Ramadan. Whoever worships in this night with faith in order to earn reward will be forgiven for all his previous sins. Some of its signs are as follows:

The night will be open, bright and extremely clear. It is neither too hot nor too cold, the weather is quite normal at this night and the moon is clearly visible. The devils are not struck with stars the whole night.

There is another sign that is the rising of the sun without rays on the following morning, and the sun looks like the moon of the 14th night. Allah has prevented the devil to come out with the sunrise of that morning (apart from that one day, whenever the sun rises in the morning the devil also comes out)."

Punishment For Not Paying Zakaat!

It is in Sahih Muslim Shareef from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that Nabi Kareem Sall Allahu alaihi wa Sallam said, If a person is the owner of gold and silver and if he does not pay its Zakaat, then on the day of Qiyaamat, plates of fire will be prepared for him, and they will then be heated in the fire of hell, and his sides, forehead and his back will be branded with it. When it is about to cool down, then the same will be repeated again. This will be the affair of a day which will last for fifty thousand years, until judgement will be pronounced amongst the servants. He will now see his path, whether it leads him towards Jannat or it leads him towards Jahannam. Nabi Sall Allahu alaihi wa Sallam was asked about the camels, and he Sall Allahu alaihi wa Sallam said, One who does not discharge what is due on him, then on the day of Qiyaamat he will be made to lay down on a huge field, and all those camels will come forth in a healthy form, and they will trample over him with their hooves and bite him with their mouths. When their last herd passes over him, the first will return (to trample over him), and with regards to the cattle and goats, he Sall Allahu alaihi wa Sallam said, such a person will be made to lay down on an open field, and all of them will come, none will be amongst them with twisted horns, nor any without horns, nor without broken horns, and they will gore him with their horns, and they will trample on him with their hooves.

There is #Zakah (charity) for everything, and the Zakah of your body is fasting, and #fasting is half of patience. [#IbnMajah, #Hadith 1745]

The sleeping of a #fasting person is #worship, his prayers are answered and his deeds are accepted. [Shu'ab al-Iman, V3, P415, #Hadith 3938]

On the Day of Judgement, a dining-mat made of #gold will be laid for #fasting people. [Kanz- al-Ummal, Vol. 8, Page 214, #Hadith 23640]

Whoever fasts for a day in Allah’s way, Allah will move his face as far away from Hell as is the distance of 70 years. #Hadith #Bukhari

Whoever misses one fast in #Ramadan without a valid reason cannot make up for it even if he fasts for the rest of his life. #Hadith #Bukhari

The one who finds #Ramadan but does not #fast is #unfortunate. [Majma’ al-Zawa'id, Vol. 3, Page. 340, #Hadith 4773]

May the person who finds #Ramadan but is not #forgiven before it departs be #disgraced! [#Musnad Imam Ahmad, Vol. 3, Page 61, #Hadith 7455]

#Fasting implies abstaining not only from eating & drinking but also from useless & indecent talking. [#Mustadrak, V2, P67, #Hadith 1611]

If anyone does not refrain from indecent talking and evil acts, Allah does not need his remaining hungry & thirsty. [#Bukhari, #Hadith 1903]

Three Levels Of Fasting

Though the apparent precondition of fast is to abstain from deliberately eating, drinking and intercourse, there are also some manners of fasting which we must get to know so that we can succeed in acquiring all the blessings of fasting. There are three degrees of fasting:

1. Fast of common people:

The literal meaning of fast is ‘to abstain’ while by Shari’ah, it implies to abstain from deliberately eating, drinking and intercourse from dawn (Subh-e-Sadiq) to sunset. This is called the fast of the common people.

2. Fast of the pious:

In addition to abstaining from eating, drinking and intercourse avoiding all types of evils is the fast of the pious people.

3. Fast of the ascetic:

To refrain from all the worldly activities and devote oneself completely to the worship of Allah is the fast of the ascetic.

Bad-Madhhab

Sayyidunā Ibrāhīm ibn Maysarah RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “He who reveres someone who is misguided has indeed aided in the destruction of Islām.” [Mishkāt]

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Haqq Muhaddith Dehlawī Bukhārī has stated regarding this Hadīth Sharīf:

“Meaning in honouring and respecting misguided people is belittling and disparaging the Sunnat. And this [belittling the Sunnat] erodes the foundations of Islām.” [Ashi’at al-Lam’āt; Volume 1]

Sayyidunā Anas RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “When you see someone who is misguided, scowl in his face, for indeed Allāh holds all misguided people enemies.” [Ibn ‘Asākir]

Sayyidunā Abū Umāmah RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Misguided people are the dogs of the people of Hell.” [Al-Dār Qutnī]

Sayyidunā Hudhayfah RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Allāh does not accept the fasts of a misguided person, or Salāh or Sadaqah or Hajj or ‘Umrah or Jihād or Nafl or Fard. He leaves Islām like a hair comes out of dough.” [Ibn Mājah]

Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “If misguided people fall ill, do not visit them; and if they die, do not participate in their Janāzah; and if you pass by them, do not give Salām to them; and do not sit with them and do not drink with them and do not eat with them and do not marry them and do not perform Janāzah Salāh upon them and do not perform Salāh with them.” [Muslim Sharīf]

This Hadīth Sharīf has been recorded by Abū Dāwūd from Sayyidunā Ibn ‘Umar, by Ibn Mājah from Sayyidunā Jābir and by ‘Aqīl and Ibn Hibbān from Sayyidunā Anad RadiyyAllāhu ‘Anhum.

There Is No Spiritual Excellence Without Following The Shariat

Hazrat Abul Makaarim Ruknud'deen radi Allahu anhu says, 'until such time that the heart is not fully attached to the Shariat, it is impossible to enter the station of Wilaayat, and actually if someone rejects it (i.e. The Shariat), he will become an infidel.

Hazrat Sayyidi Ibrahim Dasuqi radi Allahu anhu says, 'Shariat is the TREE and Haqiqat is the FRUIT.

Who will be destitute on Judgement Day?

The Holy Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) once asked his companions (Radi Allahu Anhum Ajma'een), "Do you know as to who a destitute person is?" They replied, "Ya RasoolAllah (SallAllahu Alayka wa Sallam) the one who does not have wealth is a destitute."

He (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, "The destitute in my Ummah is the one who will be brought on the Judgement Day with Salah, fasts and charity (in his book of deeds) but would have abused and accused someone, he would have taken wealth unlawfully and shed blood (or) beaten someone and as a result of these sins, his good deeds will be taken from him. If he runs out of good deeds and there are still claimants (against him), he would have to take the sins of the oppressed (people) and would resultantly be thrown into Hell."

Some Important Laws Concerning Fasting

Law: If a person intentionally broke the fast of Ramadaan, then in this case he is liable for the Qaza of that fast, and he must also keep a further 60 fasts as Kaffarah (compensation). Now, if he kept (all) sixty-one fasts, and he did not specify the day for which he is making Qaza, the fasts will still be valid. [Alamgiri]

Law: If whilst fasting one had his tooth extracted and the blood came out and flowed in below the throat, and even if this happened whilst sleeping, the Qaza for that fast is Waajib. [Raddul Muhtar]

Law: If one was rinsing the mouth and without intent, water went down the throat, of if one was snorting water into the nostrils and it reached the brain, the fast will break, unless he has forgotten that he is fasting, then in this case it will not nullify the fast, even if he did so intentionally. Similarly, if someone threw something towards a fasting person and it went into his throat, the fast will be broken. [Alamgiri]

Hazrat Junaid e Baghdadi Radi Allahu Anhu Delivers A Lecture

Hazrat Junaid-e-Baghdadi Radi Allahu Anhu spent his entire life, serving the Deen of Allah and His Beloved Rasool Sall-Allahu Aalihi Wa Sallam.
Once his Peer-o- Murshid, Hazrat Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu Anhu asked him to deliver a lecture, and he said that he did not find it ethical to lecture in the presence of his Peer.
One night, he dreamt of the Holy Prophet Sall-Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. Rasoolullah Sall-Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam commanded him to lecture.
When morning came, he went to his Peer and found that his Peer was already awaiting his presence.
As he entered the Khanqah, his Peer said, "We have all been asking you to lecture. Now the Beloved Rasool has given you the command to speak."
He asked his Peer how he had known of his dream, and he said, "Last night I made Deedar of Allah Subhaanahu Ta'aala and I heard a voice which said that the Prophet had already commanded Junaid to lecture."
He agreed to lecture on condition, that there were not more than forty people in his lectures.
It was agreed and he delivered his first lecture. During his first lecture, eighteen people passed away. He then stopped his lecture and went back home.
