It is impermissible and severely disliked to use swear words and vulgar words. The tongue will take many people in to the fire of hell. We must follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammed peace and blessings be upon him and avoid such language. There were incidents where the Sahabah may have used words that some may regard as swearing but them statements were either factually true or they were made while being drowned in the love of Allah and His Beloved peace and blessings be upon him and were befitting the context they were made in, this was a kayfiyat due to the immense love they held in their hearts, minds and souls. As for us, we must remain sane and use sensible language at all times. However, if someone does use harsh words towards an enemy of Allah and His Beloved Messenger Muhammed peace and blessings be upon him, then that is fine and befitting.
As for swearing and usage of vulgar language, then even though they deserve the harshest of words, we should avoid spoiling our tongues with vulgarity, but we should rather use harsh words, and this is not because such an evil miscreant does not deserve those words, but because of the honour and respect of the platform and the audience, and an example of this is the Mimbar of a Masjid, where you may be harsh, but not vulgar; and if a person uses some vulgar words due to a kayfiyat of love that comes over him then he is excused, what can we say to a person who is insane?
