Changing The Surname Of Women After Marriage...

A common mistake among non-Arab Muslims is changing the woman's surname to her husbands' after the marriage.

But it is not permissible in Islaam. Any human being either man or woman should be known by their Fathers name until death and not their spouse's.

The reason for this being simple, The woman is not a blood relation of her husband and it is stated in Hadeeth ...

It was narrated from Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “There is no man who knowingly calls himself after someone other than his father but he has committed kufr. Whoever claims to belong to people to whom he has no ties of blood, let him take his place in Hell.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3317; Muslim, 61)

The woman's husband may die, or she may get divorced and marry another man, shall she keep on changing the surnames? No, she can't. She has to carry her Father's name until her death. Because a woman's husband can change but not her father.

She has nothing to do with the lineage of her husband and she must continue her Father's lineage.

This is a pity that Indians brought up in a society where such culture is being followed and unknowingly Muslims also followed the same.

So we should stick to a simple policy of "follow the Sunnah, not the society".

Let us try to correct our mistakes and Let's see that our children are properly educated about such Sunnah so that they should not commit these mistakes.
